Margiela & The Hermès years: new exhibition at the MAD

Paris celebrates Margiela through two exhibitions, of which one held at the MAD, focuses on the designer’s years spent at Hermès from 1997 to 2003. This exhibition was already held at the Anvers Fashion Museum and was adapted by the Parisian museum team as well as Martin Margiela himself, who contributed to the décor, highlighting his own designs and those created for the famous saddler. Margiela, the Hermès years -22nd March to 2nd September 2018 - at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) in Paris.Interview of Marie-Sophie Carron de la Carrière: When Martin Margiela became Artistic Director of womenswear at Hermès, his continued his own label, for him, it ran in parallel, and this running parallel, we see that within this exhibition so through this orange and white checkerboard. He had his own line at the same time and the exhibition makes a statement of this round trip. It was important that he kept his personality and that he was given free rein by Hermès to take hold of its savoir-faire, of this access to Hermès, and to exceptional materials. The work method of Martin Margiela joined that of Hermès and the link was the great refinement, that’s why we have just under 100 silhouettes because they are to be looked at in every detail, and everything is discreet, the discretion, that’s a quality typical of Hermès, and Margiela himself his a discreet designer with his own brand and doesn’t put himself forward, so that is where we find a point of fusion, a proximity, a rapprochement that we can make in a natural way. He learnt a lot at Hermès, it was really for an apprenticeship for him, to all these artisans who passed on their savoir-faire to him and who in a certain way transformed him with his own creation.
