Balenciaga in London, a Major Exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum

access_time 00:01:27

2017 marks the 80th anniversary of the house of balenciaga, an occasion which will be celebrated throughout the world. such is the case in england where, for the first time, a major exhibition at london’s victoria & albert museum retraces the career of the spanish couturier, still considered one of the leading masters of design.more than 100 items of clothing are displayed, a large majority of which have never been shown to the public, having been worn by ava gardner, gloria guinness and mona bismarck.the exhibition notably takes the visitor into the 50s and 60s, at the peak of balenciaga’s career, who owned his paris atelier for 31 years. the visitor discovers his famous volumes and new constructions which surprise as much the press as they do the public. also on display are 20 hats which outline the history of balenciaga, as well as a beautiful selection of photographs, sketches, videos and fabric samples which enrich the overall experience.not to be missed, the v&a team have, for the first time, worked with the x-ray artist, nick veasey, in order to see and understand the internal workings of balenciaga’s complex couture dresses; a playful way to dispel certain mysteries.finally, the exhibition takes advantage of showcasing innovative contemporary designers and the heirs of this couturier spirit, frpm current creative director at balenciaga, demna gvasalia, to oscar de la renta, mary katrantzou, and gareth pugh.balenciaga exposition : shaping fashionvictoria & albert museum - cromwell road, london, sw7 2rluntil 18th february 2018music in the public domain: bandit & nikit
