Artistic director : niall sloan (global design director)inspiration: rebirth of the fashion house escada for their 40th anniversary, celebrated with a show in new york and the presentation of their artistic director, niall sloan, after arriving only one year ago.collection: feminine, bold and coloured. escada was founded in 1978, and was well known for its cuts and bold tones. the designer takes back this spirit through suits with marked shoulders and tightened waistlines. twill, silk shirts become tunics, polka-dots are mixed with other prints such as stripes. the show is bold and filled with energy.note: the horse print, a flash back for the designers of the brand, margaretha and wolfgang ley, who heard the name ‘escada’ during a horse race, + the heart/ symbol of the brand, seen in particular on their accessories.interview with niall sloan: lucky that i walk into a place with all of the richness of the archive of escada, and we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s there. i think it’s been nice to take the time, i’ve been at escada for a year, since taking the time to kind of go in with my perception of what it is and what it can be and then really understand, and i think that that’s why i’m so thrilled about being involved in the project is that i think it really is relevant today. i think escada is a brand that celebrates women, that empowers women.i think what i really want to investigate is the obvious femininity of soft and fluid and light but i think there is also such strength in different aspects of femininity.i love colour and prints and embellishments. i love looking for new ways of putting colours together and there are some quite experimental things i found in the archive of colour combination and so it’s really a treat for me to then play with that.people know escada and if they know escada they kind of remember an aesthetic and i don’t think as well brands in the 80s and 90s really spent a lot of time telling the story, and what i wanted to do with this show was celebrate all of our 40 years, our amazing founder margaretha ley, the husband wolfgang and the business they built together.music from the show (for use only in context of the show, under cover of the right to information).
